C., King Trisong Detsen invited the Indian scholar Santaraksita to Tibet to teach Buddhist philosophy. This Indian started with the construction of the first monastery in Tibet, Samye. But due to many obstacles he couldn\u2019t succeed. Therefore the great tantric master Padmasambhava, great scholar and abbot of Nalanda university, was invited to conclude the construction. It was the time when the first men were <a href=\"\/en\/practising-buddhism\/monastic-life\/\"><b>ordained <\/b><\/a>as monks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">From then on the Tibetan history is closely intertwined with the <strong>sacred <\/strong><b>dharma<\/b>, the\u00a0transmissions<b>\u00a0<\/b>of\u00a0<a href=\"\/en\/about-us\/lineage\/buddha\/\"><b>Buddha Shakyamuni\u2019s lineage<\/b><\/a>. The spreading of this lineage went through times of blossoming, decay and\u00a0its persecution, followed by its\u00a0slow reintroduction. Tibet emerges as the land of the spreading of the pure teachings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">Buddhism in Tibet, as we know it, developed into four great traditions. Generally, we are speaking about the <b>Early Transmission of the lineage<\/b> (Nyingma) and the <b>Later Transmission<\/b> of the lineage (Kagyu, Sakya, Gelug).<\/p>\n<p>Saying this we need to know that we are actually dealing with <strong>eight practice lineages<\/strong> (<b>Nyingma, Kadampa, Lamdre, Zhije, <a href=\"\/en\/about-us\/lineage\/vajrayana\/marpa-kagyu\/\">Marpa Kagyu<\/a>, Shangpa Kagyu, Jordrug, Dorje Sum gyi Nyendrub<\/b>) and <strong>ten academic lineages,<\/strong> which were institutionalized into four. These are\u00a0<b>Nyingma<\/b>,\u00a0<b>Kagyu<\/b>,\u00a0<b>Sakya<\/b> and\u00a0<b>Gelug<\/b>. <a href=\"\/en\/about-us\/lineage\/vajrayana\/rime\/\"><b>Rime <\/b><\/a>is not a lineage, rather the communal effort of mainly Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Thaye, Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo, Chogyur Dechen Lingpa and Tai Situ Pema Nyingje Wangpo to revive, renew, cherish and uphold and foster all lineages equally.<\/p>\n<p>H.
